Exclusive Shore Event: Valletta | Grottos, a Silent City, and the "Mini Versailles"
Our day begins with a drive to Rabat and the Wignacourt Collegiate Museum. Housed in the former residence of the Chaplains of the Order of St. John, its collection includes impressive silver and picture galleries, noteworthy relics, and other artifacts. Beneath the baroque building lies a fascinating labyrinth of 3rd-century hypogea or Roman catacombs; used as shelters during World War II, they also hold a sacred grotto where St. Paul once stayed. Continue to the "Silent City" of Mdina, Malta's capital until the 16th century and a superb example of a medieval fortified city. The location has been inhabited for more than 6,000 years, although today only a few hundred residents call Mdina home.
From there, we head to Palazzo Parisio & Gardens in the village of Naxxar; described as a "mini Versailles," the 18th-century mansion was transformed into a fairytale estate in the early 1900s by Marquis Giseppe Scicluna. View its lavish main rooms before a delicious feast of Maltese specialties with local wines and strolling musicians - made all the more magical (weather permitting) while dining in the beautifully manicured gardens.
Approximate Length: 6 hours, 30 minutes.
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Smart casual wear with comfortable shoes and sun protection. Expect moderate walking on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces. Please note that women must have their shoulders covered when entering churches.
