Exclusive Shore Event: Bridgetown | Caribbean History, Bajan Flavors
Our day exploring sunny Barbados begins at Gun Hill Signal Station, built in 1818. At 700 feet above sea level, it affords one of the best views over the island. We will travel next back to the Bridgetown area, passing by the Bussa roundabout, where an evocative sculpture symbolizing the "Breaking of Chains" commemorates an 1816 slave revolt.
Our next stop is at the George Washington House, where a 19-year-old George spent about two months in 1751 with his ailing brother, Lawrence. The house has been carefully restored and furnished as a typical but modest plantation residence of the mid-18th century. Mahogany, oak and cherry antiques, pine flooring, Royal Creamware china, wooden wall sconces, Turkish carpets, and mosquito-netted beds beautifully recreate the breezy tropical atmosphere of the period.
We'll finish our tour at the seaside Champers Restaurant for lunch, with a three-course meal featuring specialties like chicken liver pté with tropical fruit chutney, spiced pork tenderloin with tamarind sauce, and bread pudding topped with rum and orange sauce.
Approximate Length: 5 hours
