Exclusive Shore Event: Marseille | Highlights of Ansouis, Wine Tasting & Festive Lunch
Located on the Golfe du Lion, Marseille is France's oldest city. The Vieux Port (Old Harbor) is Marseille's history book: Here you'll find Hellenistic fortifications, Roman docks, and Genoese architecture. The Canebiere the city's main traffic artery is a wide boulevard in the spirit of the Champs-Elysée.
Today Voyager Club members will travel from Marseille to spend the day in the heart of Provence. Your first stop will be to the village of Ansouis. Ansouis is sheltered from the Mistral wind and overlooks the plains around the Durance River. It is considered one of the "most beautiful villages in France", and lies in the Luberon region. The village is crowned by its chteau with its lovely gardens. The chteau is among the most beautiful in the Luberon. Built as a fortress in the 10th century, it underwent many changes in the 12th and 13th centuries, and then again in the 15th and 19th centuries. During the Middle Ages, Ansouis was an ideal location from which to survey the road between Aix en Provence and Apt. Today, Ansouis has retained its original beauty. Through our connections, Voyager Club will be treated to a private tour of the chteau by the current owner.
Leaving Ansouis, we will enjoy lunch in a beautiful setting at the nearby Chateau Val Joanis. Chteau Val Joanis, has earned the title of chteau because of the splendid wines it produces. Originally the 980-acre estate of a 16th century nobleman, it is now one of the largest vineyards in the area, with a remarkable garden on the grounds that was voted "French Garden of the Year" in 2008.
We begin with a private guided aperitif tasting of the estate's distinctive white wine accompanied by a selection of local appetizers. Afterwards, a Provenal lunch will be served, cooked on the premises by the estate's private chef and paired with its award-winning wines. Before departing, we will have time to take a leisurely stroll through the gardens before returning to Marseille.
Approximate Length: Six hours.
Walking Details: For Ansouis, there is a 10-minute walk up gently sloping streets to the chteau. Many of the rooms there are on one level, but there are some stairs to get from one level to another.
