Exclusive Shore Event: Durban | Coastal Comforts, African Arts, and Botanic Bounty
We'll start our discovery of Durban with a driving tour through the bustling city, with its intriguing architecture and diverse mix of residents. We'll stop to visit The Phansi Museum House, one of the world's largest publicly accessible collections of Southern African artifacts. The collection is beautifully displayed in Roberts' House, a restored Victorian National Monument dating to 1898, and once home to Esther Roberts, one of South Africa's first female anthropologists and author of several historical novels. Some of the highlights of the museum are life-size model displays illustrating full ceremonial wear from many of the cultures of Southern Africa, beadworks from the different regions of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and some outstanding examples from the Ndebele people. The beadwork dates from the present back to the 19th century.
We continue to our lunch stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, set on a rise overlooking the Indian Ocean. We'll enjoy an elegant lunch accompanied by a local choir and dancers. Following lunch, we'll visit the Durban Botanic Gardens, the oldest surviving botanical garden in Africa, and home to orchids, palms, cycads, and a butterfly garden.
Approximate Length: 7 hours, 30 minutes
