Exclusive Shore Event: Durban | Phansi Museum, Botanical Gardens, and Festive Lunch
We begin our day traveling through the bustling streets of Durban with its intriguing architecture and cultural blend of European, Indian and Zulu communities.
We start with a visit to the Phansi Museum House, one of the world's largest publicly accessible collections of Southern African artifacts. 'Phansi' is pronounced 'punzi', meaning 'below' in Zulu, after the basement location where it began. The museum houses some of South Africa's largest collections of traditional art, crafts and artifacts. The collection is beautifully displayed in Robert's House, a restored Victorian National Monument. Robert's House was built in 1898, and was home to Esther Roberts, who lived there her entire life. She was one of South Africa's first female anthropologists, and wrote several historical novels. Some of the highlights of the museum are life-size doll displays illustrating full ceremonial wear from different regions and cultures of Southern Africa and beadworks from the different regions of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and some outstanding examples from the Ndebele people. The beadwork dates from the present back to the 19th century.
Next, we will continue to the Durban Botanical Gardens. It is Durban's oldest public institution and Africa's oldest surviving botanical gardens. It started life in 1849 as an agricultural experimental station. The 37 acres of gardens feature a variety of exotic and indigenous trees (including what is thought to be the country's first jacaranda), a highly rated orchid house which blazes with color in springtime, a rare collection of cycads (notably Encephalartos woodii, believed to be the world's rarest plant) and a sunken garden.
Our next stop will be for lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel. This gracious hotel is set on a rise overlooking the Indian Ocean, offering glorious views of miles of unspoiled beaches and is renowned for its superb personal service, charm and sophistication. The Sugar Club's signature dishes include seafood specialties.
After lunch, we will drive through the city center, passing Moses Mabhida Stadium and then along the Golden Mile back to the cruise pier.
Approximate Length: Seven hours
Suggested Attire: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Light to moderate walking.
