Exclusive Shore Event: Honolulu | Past and Present Hawaii with Festive Lunch
For 100 years, Honolulu was the toast of the Hawaii by guests arriving by steamer, flying clipper, and now luxury World Cruising Ships. This was a magical time when music floated in on breezes and the sound hula skirts and ukulele's came together in perfect unison.
Today we begin our tour with a walking tour of the Kawaiahou Church (old stone church) in Palace Square. This is the original church started by the Missionaries from Boston, upon their arrival in 1820. Starting out as a "grass hut" it slowly evolved into a solid structure made entirely of block coral, and here it stands today in the heart of Honolulu. In fact, they call it the "Heart of Honolulu". Inside you will find the largest and oldest pipe organ in Hawaii, and was once the largest West of the Mississippi River.
We continue our walk to the Missionary homes next door. Here, piece by piece, the homes were reconstructed on Hawaiian soil. We will have a private tour of the Missionary Homes given by a docent of the Museum. (Note: walking distance is approximately 1 block.)
Today we celebrate the past, while we look forward to the future. The Moana Surfrider Hotel is the landmark icon that was built in 1901, and now on the National Historic Registry. Here Hawaiian royalty and famous celebrities enjoyed high tea, music and dance until the wee hours of the morning. It was here that the famous radio show, "Hawaiian Calls" once proclaimed to the world Hawaii's famous sunsets, singers and sonatas. The famous Banyan tree still grows and spreads its branches over the inner courtyard where this radio show aired to those around the world.
The historic Moana Surfrider's expansive open air interior is adorned with the flavor of Old Hawaii and a feeling of stepping into the past. While majestic palms and island flora add to the lush, tropical feel, the Beach House Restaurant is a modern version where East meets West on the ocean side of Waikiki Beach. The Beach House strives to attain a balance between fine dining and the casual lifestyle for which Hawaii is known. Large glass windows and doors welcome Honolulu's trade winds into the main dining room. The restaurant offers stunning views of the ocean and Diamond Head Crater. We will enjoy the bounty of these islands at the hands of Maui's most celebrated culinary master.
After lunch we will return to the pier by 3:30pm.
Approximate Length: Six hours.
Suggested Attire: Casual wear with a sun hat and comfortable shoes. Moderate walking.
