Exclusive Shore Event: Lahaina | Fertile Valley and the Arts of Maui
Take a break from our port of Lahaina (its name means "merciless sun" in Hawaiian) for cooler island pursuits. We'll make our way northeast, with views of both the West Maui Mountains and the towering dormant volcano Haleakala, and arrive to the historic Capital of the County of Maui, passing government buildings and the Old Kahumanu Church, where the service is still conducted in the Hawaiian language.
We'll arrive to the Bailey House Museum and Gardens, opened today exclusively to Virtuoso Voyagers. The home was constructed as a mission in 1833, on what was then the royal compound of Kahekili, the last ruling chief of Maui. Today the museum houses the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts on Maui, from wooden bowls and utensils to spears and shark teeth used in battle, as well as more than 100 paintings of early Wailuku and Maui by the missionary Edward Bailey. On the museum's grounds we will discover gardens of native plants, a 100-year-old outrigger canoe, and a circa-1919 surfboard that belonged to athlete Duke Kahanamoku.
We'll then proceed to the Maui Tropical Plantation. Once a hub for sugarcane production, this area now shows off 550 acres of diverse agriculture and stunning views of Waikapu Valley. We'll enjoy a three-course farm-to-table lunch at the Mill House Restaurant, and then take a tram ride through the grounds. Depending on the season, we can expect to see a dazzling array of tropical flora and crops, including pineapple, papaya, jackfruit, coconut, coffee, plumeria, sugarcane, sweet potato, mango, avocado, macadamia nut, rambutan, and much more.
We'll stop for a coconut husking and opening demonstration and hear stories of Maui's past. Before departure, we'll have time to shop at the well-stocked gift shop for such goods as sweet Maui Gold pineapples and tropical plants.
