Exclusive Shore Event: Gustavia | French Twist
The Rockefellers and the Rothschilds may think that they discovered St. Barts, but its lineage extends back more than 500 years. The mountainous isle was first spotted by Christopher Columbus in 1493, and named for his beloved brother, Bartholomew. It was later claimed by Sweden, and then France; until 1878, they both managed to share it. Today, the island's flavor is decidedly French: sophisticated, elegant, and oh-so Continental.
We'll enjoy a brief overview of Gustavia, the capital "city" and main port, which wraps around a horseshoe bay of turquoise waters. The legacy of Sweden's rule remains not only in the town's name, but also its narrow streets, which are lined with quaint wooden and stone buildings. Street signs are posted in both Swedish and French.
After some time for shopping and exploration, we'll transfer to our Virtuoso Voyages luncheon in the open-air restaurant at the Hotel Le Toiny, a Relais & Chateaux property. We'll dine on the freshest local flavors executed with impeccable French flair, while feasting our eyes on sweeping views of the deep blue Caribbean.
Approximate Length: 4 hours
Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual resort wear (light colors highly recommended) with a sun hat and comfortable shoes. Light walking.
