Exclusive Shore Event: Bridgetown | Highlights of Barbados with Caribbean Lunch
Although the Portuguese discovered the island in the 16th century and named it Los Barbados, "The Bearded Ones," after the indigenous "shaggy" fir tree, the first settlers were the British, who landed here in 1625 at the now history-rich area called Holetown. The isle exudes a rich air of English traditions fragranced with a sweet dose of Caribbean spice. It's a mecca of man peacefully co-existing with nature. Today's adventure affords us the opportunity to inhale some of Barbados' treasures.
Our day begins with a drive through lush St. George Valley with a stop at the beautiful John's Parish Church. This historic and much photographed St. John's Parish Church is a Gothic beauty. It sits atop a promontory and from the sea it appears to be carved from the cliff. Its magnificent views of the rugged coastline offer great photo opportunities. We'll stroll in the small graveyard behind the church where the antique graves overlook miles of sunny beach, and enjoy a light refreshment. Then it is on to Bathsheba, one of the most striking areas of Barbados. Here we overlook the rugged Atlantic coast, and the trees of Bathsheba that define "windswept".
Our drive continues along the East Coast where we will see Cherry Tree Hill, which overlooks the parish of St. Andrew, called the Scotland District. Once covered with cherry trees, the area is now lined with mahogany trees which were introduced to Barbados in the late 18th century.
We continue our drive along the West or "Gold Coast" of the island, passing Jamestown, now known as Holetown. It was here that in 1625, a group of Englishman landed, claiming the island for King James of England, returning later with the first settlers. The island gained independence from England in 1966. At the conclusion of our drive, it will be time for our wonderful luncheon.
We will dine at Daphne's Restaurant, with modern Italian dishes in a beautiful garden setting close to the beach where the sound of the tide gently lapping the shore adds to the ambience. Daphne's combines fine cuisine and an eclectic Italian menu with a truly idyllic beachside setting.
After lunch, we will return to the pier.
Approximate Length: Five hours.
Suggested Attire: Resort casual with a sun hat and comfortable shoes. Light walking.
