Exclusive Shore Event: Shanghai | Changing China
It would take a lifetime to see all of Shanghai, but our day in the city will serve to give us a snapshot of its fascinating history and development into a global megalopolis. During Shanghai's pre-World War II heyday, it attracted the talents of international architects and designers, and as we drive through the city we'll see art deco, neo-gothic, Teutonic, and even southern antebellum structures. It's a testament to a diversity that once earned the city the title of "Paris of the East."
We'll stop for a walking tour in the old Chinese quarter, and visit lovely Yu Yuan garden, a 16th century Ming Dynasty private garden and residence. We'll stop at a local teahouse, and then transfer to the decidedly modern Shanghai Urban Planning Museum. This enormous exhibition hall reveals Shanghai's past and its rapid changes and growth as China's open-door policies have taken hold.
We'll transfer to lunch at Canton Table on the swanky Bund, enjoying internationally inflected Chinese cuisine, such as chilled foie gras with grapefruit and taro dumplings with Portuguese-style chicken. Following our meal, we'll continue to the French Concession, one of the original European settlements. Here we'll see many fine examples of 19th and early 20th century architecture arrayed along leafy streets. Today, many of the buildings are government-run guesthouses and hotels, unique symbols of Shanghai as a city where east and west once merged.
Please note: In the case of a Monday tour, guests will visit the Jade Buddha Temple rather than the Urban Planning Museum. One of two major Buddhist temples in the city, it was built to house two exquisite jade Buddha pieces brought from Burma, both of exceptional quality and workmanship. The highlight of the temple is a six-foot seated Buddha sculpture carved from one solid piece of white jade.
