Exclusive Shore Event: Tauranga | Boiling Earth, Maori Heritage
The heartland of New Zealand's Maori culture, Rotorua is also an intensely active geothermal hotspot, and a fascinating destination. From our port of Tauranga, we'll make our way to our first stop at Hells Gate Geothermal Park, set on 50 acres. Our private guided tour will show us erupting geysers, steaming fumaroles, violently boiling pools of mud, and geothermal springs. We'll walk in the footsteps of ancient Maori warriors through the swirling clouds of steam, past the hot pool where the Maori princess Hurutini lost her life, and see Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere.
We'll go on to visit Ohinemutu Maori Village, home to about 260 people. Here, we'll see how locals have adapted to this geothermal area, and learn about early Maori settlements and culture, and the development of tourism in Rotorua. We see the ancestral meeting house and learn why it remains a significant gathering place.
We'll continuing on to St. Faith's Anglican Church, a beautifully carved and adorned church, and proceed next to the circa-1933 Blue Baths, a stunningly restored bathhouse as well as a versatile and elegant event venue. We'll enjoy a delicious lunch with local wines in this unique setting, before transferring back to Tauranga.
Approximate Length: 8 hours
