Exclusive Shore Event: Moorea, French Polynesia | Deeper into Paradise
Eight jagged peaks draped in lush greenery make Moorea an extra-gorgeous French Polynesian island, but there's more to this tropical spot than good looks, and we'll discover Moorea past and present, sea to sky. We'll stop first at the base of Opunohu Bay, newly designated as a national park, and then begin our journey to the Opunohu Valley, the central heart of the island. We'll see both native and introduced vegetation, learn about the island's geologic history, and see the spectacular view from the Belvedere lookout.
We'll next make our way to reconstructed archaeological sites to discover the island's first settlers, who arrived via canoe some 1,000 years ago. We'll drive on via back roads to see more of the interior and some of the agricultural crops, and emerge at the coast via the village of Pao Pao at Cook's Bay. We will continue to the Atitia Cultural Center, where we will talk about traditional Polynesian knowledge and the ongoing efforts to conserve this priceless resource. We will make a short stop just down the road at the UC Berkeley Gump Research Station, to see the center's work in tropical sustainability.
Our immersive day will wind down with a relaxing lunch at the lovely seaside Moorea Beach Café, before heading back to the ship.
