Exclusive Shore Event: Punta Arenas | City Overview with Estancia Lunch
Punta Arenas, capital of the Magellanic and Antarctic Region, is Patagonia's most important city. Its streets hum with activity and its airport and seaports bustle with traffic. The town has made a living from carbon mines, wool production, petroleum, fishing, and as a service center for cargo ships. Today, the streets are lined with residential homes, business offices, hotels downtown and an industrial port. It rich history, along with the extremity of its climate and position overlooking the renowned Magellan Strait make for a fascinating place to explore.
Our day begins with a stop at the observation point at Cerro La Cruz Hill. Here we will admire the amazing view, gazing across the city, Magellan Strait and Tierra del Fuego. After, we will see the monument to Magellan in the Plaza Munoz- Gamero, or browse for bargains at the handicraft stalls. We'll, stop for a visit of the Municipal Cemetery to see the mausoleums of pioneer families and tomb dedicated to the Unknown Ona, the now extinct Fireland Indians. We will also pass by the Braun-Menendez Regional Museum.
Not only will visitors enjoy the activities on the ranch itself, but also get the chance to explore the nearby Palomares Mountains, home to an impressive colony of condors nesting in the upper reaches of caves. Close-range encounters with these mighty birds are few and far between, but those fortunate enough to participate in this excursion (and fit enough to reach the upper levels of the hills) can get within a few feet. As the condors launch themselves into flight, one can almost feel the gust of wind generated by their huge wings. For those who do not wish to climb the hill, there are still some excellent photo opportunities from the bottom.
Upon arrival to the farm, one is greeted by a charming family and taken on a tour that highlights various activities on the ranch. Chilean cowboys, or huasos, on horseback will show their skills in rounding up young sheep providing excellent photo opportunities by bringing the herd to a stop directly in front of the lucky visitor. Watch out for the amazing kelpie dog, who always entertains visitors with his speed and agility. A sheep shearing demonstration is also part of the activities.
Before lunch, a Pisco Sour cocktail will be served with delicious baked empanadas, prior to a typical barbecue luncheon of Patagonian lamb, grilled slowly for hours on stakes around the fire. There will of course be no shortage of good Chilean red wine and soft drinks to accompany the luncheon.
Approximate Length: Eight hours
Suggested Attire: Casual warm clothing (light jacket, sweater) and comfortable walking shoes. Moderate walking on flat surfaces.
