Exclusive Shore Event: Sete, France | Discover Montpellier with Traditional Lunch
This morning we depart from the dock in Sete, located in the French region of Languedoc-Roussillon. Sete is a very charming town known for its canals and 14 bridges and famous for water-born jousting.
The prestigious world heritage city of Montpellier is just a short ride from Sete and has been a major Mediterranean center for over a thousand years. Montpellier is home to one of Europe's oldest medical schools and has been ranked by the New York Times as one of the top cities to visit in 2012, boasting gardens, theaters, museums, medieval streets, lavish 17th Century mansions as well as futuristic buildings by contemporary architects.
Our first stop will take us to a fascinating and highly unusual place! We will meet a craftsman of stringed instruments. We will enjoy this exclusive visit among the scents of wood and varnish of his work. After describing the places which have marked Montpellier's musical history, one of the city's 11 luthiers will share his passion with you as he tells you about his work.
One of Montpellier's secrets is that it is the home of the western world's oldest Medical School still in use, formerly a medieval monastery then an Episcopal palace and now the present medical school. Your guide will then take you to the heart of an exceptional site: the "conservatory of anatomy", with nearly 5,600 objects of inestimable importance.
Then it's on to lunch in the heart of Montpellier where we will enjoy a lunch of local specialties and wines.
After lunch we will stop at two interesting spots. The first one is the Etang of Thau, the largest string of lagoons that stretch along the French coast and a well-known oyster center. We will discover the charming little town of Bouzigues that has been producing oysters and mussels as far back as the Greeks - the earliest fishermen that lived here in the troglodyte caves along the shore. On an easy stroll we will enjoy the 15th century church, the oyster beds and if you would like, sample very fresh oysters.
Our last stop will be in Sete itself. We will drive to the top of Mount St Clair which is very well-known for its 360 degrees view. On a clear day, one can see all the way to the Spain border. We will then return to the ship.
Approximate Length: Seven hours
Suggested Attire: Resort casual with comfortable walking shoes recommended. There will be light to moderate walking on uneven surfaces.
