Exclusive Shore Event: Lahaina | Highlights of Maui, Pineapple Plantation and Lunch at the General Store
Aloha! Our morning drive begins with a historical overview of the waterfront area of Old Lahaina Town. For 100 years Lahaina was the chosen area of Hawaiian royalty and is now a National Historic Landmark. Historical sites along our route include the oldest continuing lighthouse in the Pacific, Maui's first missionary house built in 1834 and the largest Banyan tree in the Pacific. Over 150 years old, this tree covers more than two acres. The property sits on ancient volcanic lava that once flowed into the sea and overlooks Molokai'i Island.
We will then make our way to Maui's southwestern shores, known for her surf spots, farms and beautiful rugged shores. This road was cut my migrant workers at the turn of the century, through coral and lava cliffs, making it one of the most difficult and laborious in
Hawaii. We will make a brief stop at Papawai Point, overlooking the two sides of the Island and the Valley between two Volcano's, where Maui gets her name, "The Valley Isle". In the distance you can see the 4 Islands that create Maui County; Mau'i, Moloka'i, Lanai,Kahoolawe, and Molokini. (The latter two islands are uninhabited.) View the scenery and the spectacular ocean views as we traverse into the heart of the Valley Isle.
This area is known in Hawaii for its rich volcanic soil and one of the most fertile in the world. Here we will see sugar cane farms and pineapple fields that stretch for over 100 square miles; entire valleys of emerald green and gold that is visually spectacular.
Today's highlight is a visit to the Hali'imaile Pineapple Plantation, the universally recognized symbol of hospitality and Maui is the world's premier pineapple growing region. Maui Gold pineapples are "born and raised" on Maui ... they are extra-sweet and loaded with three times the Vitamin C of traditional pineapples.
Maui Gold and Hali'imaile Pineapple Company is the only operating pineapple plantation of its kind in the entire nation. Owned and operated by former pineapple plantation workers, they will narrate colorful commentary that weave history, facts and trivia into an authentic pineapple plantation experience. Not only do we get to see and taste pineapples growing in the fields, we also get to see the inside of the packing facility at Hali'imaile.
Your guide will explain the pineapple growing process and cut pineapples right from the fields for you to taste the varying stages.
You'll learn first-hand why field-ripened pineapple are so much better than most of the ones you find at your grocery store back home. The tour continues with a walk-through at the unique packing and shipping factory at Hali'imaile before we head to our lunch venue.
Lunch today will be at the Hali'imaile General Store in historic Haili'imaile in the center of the Sugar Cane district. The pineapple boom in the islands in the early part of the last century is mainly responsible for the existence of this historic building. In the 1920's, camp houses for plantation workers were needed to house the hard working immigrants that raised the crops that were the engine of island commerce. Construction of the camp store followed under the direction of Maui Agricultural Company's Pineapple Department and in 1925 our legacy was born. The plantation store was not just for groceries. The original Hali'imaile Store was a butcher shop, fish market, post office, and had departments for clothing and household appliances. This building was the one stop shop for all necessities as well as the place to catch up on news and a depot for local gossip...a tradition we proudly encourage in the present day! The store continued operating over the decades in various formats until 1988 when all of that changed. Ms. Beverly Gannon is Hawaii's own, world-renowned chef that will present her cuisine to our guests today. Enjoy the Hawaiian Plantation style surroundings as you enjoy a 3-course luncheon featuring fresh local fresh fish and plantation favorites.
After lunch we will make our way back to the pier.
