Exclusive Shore Event: Hobart | Museum of Old and New Art, Wine Tasting, and Lunch
Hobart, the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania, has evolved from a penal colony since its founding in 1804 into an illustrious small city. On our tour, we will explore the city's beautiful gardens, art galleries, eclectic architecture, and taste exquisite food made from local Australian produce.
Our day begins where we will meet our experienced guides and board comfortable, luxury coaches provided for us. We will then embark on a brief city tour of the city of Hobart before proceeding to MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. Guests who have in the past traveled to England will notice vague similarities between British architecture of the 19th century and some of the older buildings of Hobart intertwined with modern construction. The sporadic pubs on Hobart street corners are reminiscent of a scene from London, and once provided the original soldiers and settlers of Hobart a sense of familiarity with their homes on the other side of the world. After visiting the main sites, our coach will then travel along the River Derwent to MONA, situated on a small peninsula branching out into the Otago Bay outside the city and surrounded by picturesque vineyards.
The museum itself appears small from the outside, but its interior possesses a spiral staircase leading down to a three-level labyrinth composed of display spaces of a wide variety of art. MONA is a privately held collection, the largest in Australia, owned by David Walsh. Walsh, who made his fortune gambling, now collects art pieces from immensely talented but lesser known artists of the world and displays them in his gallery. We will explore these old and new pieces before having an equally artistic lunch at The Source, serving contemporary French cuisine made from local produce. The extensive wine list features more than ten thousand bottles from around the world, including the best Australian and New Zealand wines. With our appetites and taste buds satisfied, we will then depart for Puddleduck Vineyard for a tour and wine tasting.
Puddleduck is one of many wineries located in the world-famous Coal River Valley wine region, known for producing reds and whites akin those of Europe rather than mainland Australia. In fact, the growing climate in Coal River Valley is regarded as comparable to France and Germany. We will have the opportunity to make this determination for ourselves by tasting and contrasting the local wines.
After departing Puddleduck, we will visit the historic village of Richmond. Aside from the addition of motor vehicles, the village has hardly changed since its first settlement in the early 19th century. The striking sandstone buildings against the scenic backdrop create a setting like no other. We will have an hour of free time to explore the quaint village, and perhaps drop into some of the local shops. Finally, we will re-board the coach for a 30-minute ride back to the ship.
Approximate Length: Eight hours.
Suggested Attire: Smart casual wear is recommended. Walking will be at your discretion. You will have the opportunity in the village of Richmond to explore the surrounding, hilly area.
