Exclusive Shore Event: Tarragona | Roman Tarragona Highlights and Lunch at an Olive Oil Mill
The town of Trraco (modern day Tarragona) is the first and oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula, and it became the capital of the Province of Hispania Citerior, during the reign of Augustus. As a major administrative and mercantile city in Roman Spain, Trraco was endowed with many fine buildings, and parts of these have been revealed in a series of exceptional excavations. Although most of the remains are fragmentary, many preserved beneath more recent buildings, they present a vivid picture of the grandeur of this Roman provincial capital. The Roman remains of Trraco are of exceptional importance in the development of Roman urban planning and design and served as the model for provincial capitals elsewhere in the Roman world.
Today we depart by motor coach with our guide for an introduction to historic Tarragona with our first stop to see the Les Ferreres Aqueduct also known as the Devil's Bridge and was built to supply water to Tarragona. It dates back to the 1st Century AD.
Next we drive back to the port area and start our local walking tour at the city walls. We will view a model of how the Roman city was originally and then go into the internal vaults of the Roman Forum from where the empire was ruled. Visit the Circus and then finally see the outside of the Amphitheatre which was originally built during the reign of Trajan or Hadrian for some 14,000 spectators.
We will then depart for La Boella which is set in the heart of a 272-acre estate of olive trees and gardens. La Boella is an olive mill built on pre-Roman foundations and documented from the 12th century on an estate that has maintained its traditional cultivation of the olive and the vine since then. Since time immemorial La Boella has played an important role in both the agricultural and the social life of the area. We will sample the extra virgin olive oils made on the estate before we sit down to a delicious lunch of typical regional cuisine with local wines before we return to the ship.
Approximate Length: Seven hours.
Suggested Attire: Casual attire with comfortable walking shoes. Approximately 1 hour of walking in the Roman ruins with a few inclines and steps.
