Corfu the storm-tossed refuge of Odysseus is the crown jewel of the Ionian Islands. Its Old Town is a charming blend of cafes and shops tucked into the nooks and crannies of alleys and arcades. And it's an island of saints, heroes, and royalty.
We begin with a drive through the center of town to Kanoni peninsula where we will have the opportunity to view famous Mouse Island. "Pontikonissi", Mouse Island in Greek, is a small island with an ancient chapel. According to legend, when Odysseus was returning home, Poseidon turned his ship into stone and Mouse Island was formed. We'll also see the lovely Convent of Vlacherna built on a rock next to the island.
From Kanoni, we will continue on through Corfu Town passing outside the Mon Repos Palace, where The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, the British Queen's husband, was born (1921) and baptized. The Greek Royal family spent their summer holidays at Mon Repos until the last King Constantine, after a referendum in 1974, went into exile in England.. In Corfu Town, we'll stroll along picturesque streets and see the residence of the High Commissioner, a splendid Edwardian building built in 1824 that once housed the seat of the Knights of St. Michael and St. George and was also the Palace of the King of Greece. The impressive bronze statue of the British High Commissioner, Sir Frederick Adam offers an excellent photo opportunity. We continue on, making our way to the Venetian quarters of Cambiello and Corfu's historical center. We'll see Town Hall, once a Venetian theater built in 1690, and the Church of St. Spyridon, Patron Saint of Corfu which contains rare icons and the holy crypt of the Saint himself. After our visit, we will have some time at leisure to shop.
Then, we'll reboard our coach and drive onward to Paleokastritsa, where we will visit the 13th century Monastery of the Virgin Mary built on a rock. Walking among the small garden, admiring the fascinating views, we'll visit the Greek Orthodox Church and its' small museum containing rare icons and books. It is still inhabited by monks today. Leaving the Monastery, we continue our drive through small picturesque villages typical of Corfu towards the village of Aghios Giannis where a wonderful luncheon awaits us.
We'll enjoy a feast of barbecued Greek specialties with wine specially prepared for us at one of the most popular restaurants on the island of Corfu. Located in the middle of a large farming area, the owners take great pride on keeping the original buildings unchanged. Lunch will be served in a beautiful garden setting under majestic old oaks. We'll be regaled with traditional Corfiote music and dance during lunch.
We will return to the pier following lunch.

Suggested Attire: Casual wear with comfortable shoes. Moderate walking on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces, including stairs.
