Exclusive Shore Event: Bergin | City Tour, Luncheon
Bergen is one of the oldest cities in Norway, founded in 1070 and has always been an important center for trade and culture. Its site and beauty drew the attention of the royal family and it became one of several royal cities of residence. In 1240, Bergen was declared the capital of Norway. For centuries, it was one of the most important cities in the German Hanseatic League.
Our day begins with a scenic drive through the city on our way to the Floibanen funicular, where we will take a small train (funicular) to the top of Mount Floien, about 1000 ft. above sea level. Here we will admire the breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings before we take the train back down to start our exploration of the city. Our next stop is the Bryggen Museum- the Institute of Medieval Archeology. Its location is the site of one of the oldest buildings in Bergen, where excavations took place between 1955 and 1972. Exhibits include unearthed ceramics and artifacts. The displays illustrate commerce, shipping, cultural activities, handicrafts and daily life in the Middle Ages. We'll learn of the roles played by both the Vikings and German tradesman in shaping the history of Bergen.
We continue on foot, as our guide takes us to the nearby St. Mary's Church. This church holds a special position in the history of Bergen. The first high mass in the church was held in the middle of the 12th century, and the church is in fact the oldest remaining building in Bergen. From St. Mary's Church, we continue our guided tour with a visit of the wharf, called Bryggen in Norwegian. Bryggen was the city's oldest urban development and financial center throughout medieval times, and it has today been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From 1360 for a period of almost 400 years, German merchants dominated trade at the wharf. Bryggen became a German office for the Hanseatic League, and we will learn more about this trade organization as well as how this affected the locals.
We'll then enjoy a delicious Norwegian repast complimented by wine, specially prepared for us at Bryggen Tracteursted, a restaurant right in the heart of the wharf. This restaurant used to be an assembly room for the German merchants and is in fact the oldest drinking place in the whole country that is still in use.
Approximate Length: Seven hours.
Suggested Attire: Casual wear with comfortable shoes. Moderate walking, includes stairways, cobblestone streets, and uneven surfaces.
